History of the IC by Niki Tafoya
Integrated Circuit???
There are millions of them today, and they are everywhere...but what is an "integrated circut"? What is it used for and how was it discovered? These are some questions I hope to help you with in this short informational essay.
"Advanced" Electrical Circuit.
To create an electrical circuit we use different electrical components. Some of these components are transistors, diodes, resistors, and capacitors. Each of the components has a very special job to do, and when you use them in different ways the possibilities of what you can create are endless!
Alarms,computers...anything. The transistor actually replaced the vacuum tube in 1947 and this was considered to be a major discovery. With this breakthrough, new ideas would arise with a drive to create even more advanced circuits, however the road would not be easy!
Problems!
With their new knowledge, electrical engineers sought to come up with an advanced circuit, but to their dismay, they would also run into a few problems. Currently circuits were being manually created...by hand! Can you imagine all those tiny components being put together by hand? I can't either... and it was impossible. Besides this, the problem of speed also needed solving. The larger the circuits, the slower the speed, which was bad for lets say a computer.
Kilby & Noyce

Jack S. Kilby, newly employed at the ever growing Texas instruments came to the rescue in September of '58. Kilby had created an integrated circuit by using parts from the same block of material. It was tested and worked, and for this he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2000. A little while after this all happened, Robert Noyce created an integrated circuit that solved some a problem that Kilby's circuit had. Interconnecting all of the components. In addition to Noyce's integrated circuit, he was also a co-founder of one of the largest manufactures of integrated circuits- Intel.
I've grown to have an interest in this stuff since I started working for Federal Electronic. It has become one of my hobbies.

The creation of a chip today.
Today, we use Photolithography. A UV light is used to shine through a "cover" onto a silicon wafer. After developing and cutting out sections, the electrical properties are changed after being processed. A circuit is made and a metal is applied to it. Photosensitive film is added and the process is repeated again. The chip may then be tested and packaged.

ATTN: FELLOW VETERANS
READ THIS!
OSD OSBP is a policy office that advises the Secretary of Defense and the Under Secretary of Defense (AT&L) on small business acquisition programs. This office does not award contracts or subcontracts. Contracting is done through the Military Services and the Defense Agencies. Our contacts page lists DoD Small Business Offices involved with SDVOSB related contracting.
As a Veteran, you probably have several questions about how to do business with the Department of Defense. We recommend first determining if your business qualifies as a service-disabled veteran-owned small business. Certain set-aside and sole source contracts are available for service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses. See our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for more information.
Veteran’s and service-disabled veterans interested in marketing their business to the DoD should review our 10 step guide for doing business with the DoD.
